My name is Kate and this is my family history. I began researching in 2020 and very soon I began to feel like it was my calling in life. I’m hoping to begin studying for an MSc in Genealogical, Palaeographic & Heraldic Studies with the University of Strathclyde this year or next. My BA is in English Literature and with this blog I hope to combine my passion for writing with my passion for genealogy.
My Family History
I’m mostly researching my mother’s side of the family, who are mostly from Essex and London. Surnames include:
- Cuthbert (East London, Essex)
- Langley (Essex)
- Bowden (Devon, Cornwall, Tottenham)
- Williams (Manchester, Essex, Dublin)
- Gardiner (Rotherhithe)
- Lewis (Suffolk, Essex)
- Burnard (Devon, Cornwall)
- Strout (Cornwall)
My father’s side of the family, though very interesting, is rather complicated and difficult to research, as my paternal grandmother’s family were of German heritage and lived in what is now the Ukraine. I try and research them too, but sadly it’s just not as productive as my mother’s side. Still, you will probably see them here from time to time!
Although I go by Kitty or Kate Cuthbert online, and Kate is indeed my first name, my surname isn’t Cuthbert. “Kitty Cuthbert”, or Kate Beatrice Cuthbert née Williams (also known as Mrs Bernard Cuthbert, a successful breeder of chow chow dogs!), pictured right, was my great-grandmother. I was named after her and although she died thirty years before I was born, she’s always been a role model of mine. Before I knew much about my family history, I knew about her and always found her fascinating. As I’m mostly researching my mother’s side of the family, I feel like it makes sense for me to go by her surname in genealogical circles, and my name plus my mother’s maiden name, also happens to be the name of my great-grandmother!
